| Das ehemals zur Umweltstiftung WWF Deutschland gehörende WWF-Auen-Institut, das von Prof. Dr. Emil Dister geleitet wird, ist bereits seit dem 01. April 2004 offiziell in die Universität Karlsruhe (heute: Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, KIT) eingegliedert. Seit dem 01. Oktober 2010 ist das WWF-Auen-Institut eine Abteilung des Instituts für Geographie und Geoökologie. Dadurch bietet sich die Möglichkeit, die wissenschaftliche Arbeit zum Thema Fluss- und Auenökologie in engem Schulterschluss mit dem KIT fortzusetzen und auenökologische Fragestellungen in die Lehre einfließen zu lassen. Das KIT als Ausbildungsstätte verschiedenster Experten im Wasserbereich stellt sich damit auf neue gesellschaftliche und rechtliche Anforderungen (z.B. durch die Wasserrahmenrichtlinie der EU) ein.
In der Vergangenheit rückten Flussauen und ihre Bedeutung für Mensch und Natur vor allem durch extreme Hochwasserereignisse in das Interesse der Öffentlichkeit. Das 1985 gegründete WWF-Auen-Institut betrachtet Flüsse und Auen seit jeher als eine ökologische Einheit und ist eine inzwischen seit zwei Jahrzehnten international anerkannte Adresse für Auenforschung und Auenentwicklung.

| Neben der Erforschung des Funktionierens der verschiedenen Auen-Ökosysteme liegt ein besonderer Schwerpunkt der Arbeit des WWF-Auen-Institutes auf der engen Verzahnung zwischen Hochwasserschutz, Auenentwicklung und Renaturierung. Dabei werden nicht nur wissenschaftliche Fragestellungen wie die Wechselwirkungen zwischen Überflutungen, Organismen, Böden, Relief, Grundwasser, Nutzungen etc. bearbeitet, sondern auch konkrete Lösungen für Probleme im Auenbereich entwickelt und planerisch umgesetzt. Dies wird von einem interdisziplinären Team geleistet, das damals wie heute in verschiedenen Flusslandschaften Europas und darüber hinaus tätig ist. |

The WWF-Floodplain Institute was founded by WWF Germany in 1985 and has been under the lead of Prof. Emil Dister since then. In April 2004 the institute became part of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, formerly University of Karlsruhe). Since October 1st 2010 the facility is a department within the Institute for Geography and Geoecology. This offers opportunities to continue the scientific works of the unit in close cooperation with KIT and implement floodplain ecology into the teaching curriculum. KIT as an educational facility with a broad range of water related expertise thus adds another competence to its portfolio addressing new requirements of society and law (like the European Water Framework Directive).
In the past floodplains and their importance for man and nature entered public awareness mostly in the context of extreme flood events. The WWF Floodplain Institute has since its beginning considered rivers and their floodplains as an inseparable ecological unit. Since more than two decades the institute has been an internationally recognised facility for floodplain research and development. |

| Besides its research on functional aspects of various floodplain ecosystems, a main focus of the WWF Floodplain Institute is on the close connection of flood protection, floodplain development and restoration. Scientific subjects like the interaction of flooding, organisms, soils, topography, ground water, landuse etc. are treated as well as solution focussed development and planning of floodplain issues. This is being carried out by an interdisciplinary team which has always and still is working in various river landscapes of Europe. |
