Caroline Huth's doctoral project examines the potential of cycling to improve accessibility in rural areas of Germany.
Accessibility and mobility problems increase with decreasing population density and particularly affect rural areas. Limited mobility options, high dependence on cars, and limited public transport services can lead to mobility and accessibility poverty and hinder social participation. At the same time, cycling has the potential to improve everyday mobility and accessibility in rural areas, not least thanks to technical developments such as e-bikes.
The project investigates the extent to which (spatial) injustices manifest themselves in the cycling-based accessibility and availability of cycling infrastructure in rural areas of Germany, and the underlying dynamics (in planning processes) that structure these possible injustices and uneven accessibilities.
Theoretically, the work is located at the interface between mobility research and social/spatial justice. The aim of the work is to create conceptual and empirical foundations for socially just and sustainable mobility planning in rural areas and to anchor cycling more firmly as a component of ensuring accessibility.
